Some simple GIF images don't display or sometimes only partially display in Firefox 5.0 running Windows 7, on my web site:
http://www.tulane.edu/~sanelson/eens1110/igneous.htm

The images are some of those on the right and side below "Origin of Magma". The images do show up in Firefox 3.6, IE9, Chrome, and the iOS version of Safari. What could be causing this?

It displays correctly in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode which means that one of your add-ons (and mine) is the culprit. See screenshot I just took in Safe Mode.

Your screen shot is not where the images are not being displayed. It is farther down the page on the right hand side. I also tried loading the page in Safe Mode, and again, some of the images do not appear or only partially appear.

There are validation errors on that page. It might help to correct those. The information is accessible here:

  • Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
  • Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
  • Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
  • Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).

If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. You all gave me hints on how to fix the problem. For some reason, the gif images that were not displaying were truncated. Despite this, they show up fine in all image viewers I have available to me and in all web browsers I can test, but not in Firefox 5.0 which must be less tolerant of such things. I recreated the problem gif images and everything now seems to work.
