Despite literally hours of frustrating -- now infuriating -- effort, my inbox won't show "from," which was removed by the most recent update. Is this problem fixable? If so, how? (If not, I'm damn well going to dump Thunderbird.)

This might have been some corruption during install. I suggest downloading current version and installing over the top of your installation.

Is your message list set for Cards View or Table View? View/Layout/Message List Header has an icon next to the Quick Filter button to set the view. The From or Correspondents column can be displayed in Table View.
