If this is a POP account, I don't think there are any options, but if IMAP, this URL may offer some suggestions:

It is a POP account.
However, as I remember, in earlier versions of Thunderbird there was a button which made Thunderbird immediately address the server for downloading received mails.
I have no idea. It was just a possibility, as I am not aware of this feature ever existing. But sometimes there are addons that do things of which I am unaware.
