I used to be able to write a note and include a URL. I could high light it,h it 'insert' and it gave me the option to create a link to that URL. Something happened and I no longer have the 'insert' option in the tool bar. Besides links, you could also insert pictures. How do I get the toolbar to include 'insert' again?

You need to be composing using html formatting to be able to see and use that insert option in the menu.

So, two likely causes:

  • you're not composing in html
  • a toolbar or menu has been disabled

Incoming messages will be either plain text or html, or a combination of both. You can usually choose whether you see the plain text or the html form of these. Thunderbird replies in the same format as you view the incoming message, so a reply to a plain text message won't have html options.

The default composition mode for each account is set in is Account Settings, under Composition & Addressing. In general, you can switch to the alternative mode by holding down shift when starting a new message or reply.

If you have simply lost sight of the menu or a toolbar in a particular window, then open the affected window (that would be the write/compose window in this scenario) and press alt to see the menu, then select View|Toolbars and re-select the menu or toolbar as appropriate.

I have it set to use HTML.

I wonder if the problem is that I'm using and old Windows XP operating system that isn't supported any more?
