Why don't you make "autoplay" a "Preferences" item
Why don't you make "autoplay" a "Preferences" item instead of an about:config item?
It is my #1 complaint!

Hi,
The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.
If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.
Disabling autoplay can break websites that use specific JavaScript to check whether the video is playing and have a problem with detecting the current state, so it wouldn't be a good idea to expose this setting in the user interface. If you modify about:config then this is at your own risk as you can see by the warning.
But it IS a "Preferences" item in Firefox for Android!
There are two autoplay prefs in the current release.
- media.autoplay.enabled = true
- media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground = true
On Android media.autoplay.enabled is toggled via its options.
We have seen cases reported on desktop where disabling this pref is causing issues with not being able to start the video and other media playing related issues. So remember to try to toggle this pref in case of issues with playing media.
Hi All, The way I feel about this issue is..if the developer's of this browser REALLY want to gain more acceptance in the marketplace, they need to listen what the user's of the browser suggest. I also feel as though we should have at least SOME control of video's playing automatically without having to go into the about:config area to manually change the setting's, and also I don't see the need to have to use an addon either. Of course..that's just MY opinion. David

You can make suggestion to Mozilla directly, by providing Feedback - here. https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/ Or by using the Help > Submit Feedback ... menu item in Firefox.
All but 2 or 3 support contributors around here doing support are volunteers who are merely other users. As a whole we don't have any "ins" with the developers or "have the ear" of those in charge of things related to Firefox.
Hi the-edmeister, Your point is well taken..I might actually do that and see if in fact I receive any type of response. Thanks, David

If you are talking about blocking HTML5 Autoplay there is an extension which does that in Firefox 55 and later. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-autoplay/ Won't do anything for blocking Flash or stopping the autoplay for Flash presentations, though.
But there's a different extension to specifically block Flash https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noflash/
I don't use Firefox 57 much and thus can't comment on either of those extensions and how well they work in Firefox 57, but have used the earlier version of both with older versions of Firefox and they worked well. I'm sticking with an older ESR 52 version of Firefox for awhile as I get Firefox 57 + later Quantum configured to my tastes.
Hi, I feel like we shouldn't have to rely on add-on's for everything, the developers should be able to make some changes in the settings area. David
Let Mozilla know how you feel by submitting Feedback, either thru Help > Submit Feedback ... or by using the form on this webpage: https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/
We here in support can provide support for Firefox as it is made, but we can't influence the decisions that the developers make about Firefox and its features, or lack thereof. And very few people who have influence over such rarely grace us with there presence here in the support fora, which is primarily users helping other users, as is done with most open source and free for use applications.
