Can't find the * symbol to open bookmarks. I want to move it back to the toolbar.

In the prior version of FireFox, there was a handy * symbol on the left side of the toolbar area. I used this often to move from one part of my viewing to another.

I understand that, if I could see the symbol in the menu, I could move it up to the toolbar area. But I just can't find it.

  • You can toggle the Bookmarks sidebar off/on via "View > Sidebar > Bookmarks" or "Ctrl+B" (Command+B on Mac)
  • You can toggle the History sidebar off/on via "View > Sidebar > History" or "Ctrl+H" (Command+H on Mac)

You can install the Classic Theme Restorer extension to get a toolbar button in the Customize palette to toggle the Bookmarks Sidebar on/off.

This button should still be at the right of the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar as two button next to each other, one being the star to bookmark a page and next to it the button that open the Bookmarks Menu drop-down list.

If you do not see this button, then check for issues with the localstore.rdf file.

Thanks, that is helpful.

However, it does not provide the ease of use and functionality I've come to rely on.

Often I switch to a folder that is several layers deep, in which I use several bookmarks, one after the other. This seems to requires me to follow that path all the way to the desired folder each time. I do see that if I ask to see them all, I can retain the depth of bookmark folders I want, but it is on another page, rather than sharing the browser page of the site I'm on. Previously I could have it on the left of my screen, or toggle it off for a full screen and toggle it back fully displayed when I wanted to move on.

I'm trying here to adapt to this new version without loosing the kind of flow I've developed and used comfortably for several years.

I've just found a new limitation from my prior practice with this new version.

Most often I use this quick bookmark selection when I'm in private browsing. But using the full bookmark display with its advantage of keeping things open to the depth I wish, then defaults to sending the selected link to the public page, not the private page. This wasn't a problem before 'when the bookmark list was part of the page I was on.

I suppose I could elect to close the public page when I'm doing this work in the private page, so the only place to open it was the page I was on.
