For the last week or so when going to a multitude of sites I keep getting unwanted advertisements of various kinds. They include pop-ups when going to a site, opening a new tab when clicking somewhere on a web page and underlined blue links appearing on random words. How can I get rid of this, as it's annoying and seems to be slowing down Firefox?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Also, go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page and get a good add / pop-up blocker.

The first program listed seems to have solved it. Cheers.

Don't stop with just one. Each of the scanners works differently. Where one could miss something, another may pick it up.
