I couldn't open Hotmail from Firefox. Under help I found that others had that problem and that it could be fixed by resetting Firefox. I did that. My hotmail problem was fixed. I received a message from Firefox that Java had been disabled. I don't think I need Java. I'd like to remove it completely but it doesn't show up on my list of programs. How do I uninstall Java from my computer? Thanks.

Are you sure that this is about Java and not JavaScript?

To avoid confusion:

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Thank you very much for your response. I have tried this. The problem is that since Firefox reset and disabled Java, Java doesn't appear in the program list.

To Cor-el. I'm pretty sure the problem was with Java. I had an old version and had been prompted to update several times. Since I rarely if ever need Java I hadn't bothered. When Firefox couldn't open hotmail, I did a little reading and found that resetting Firefox had corrected that hotmail problem for other users. So I reset Firefox. When I opened Firefox the first time after that I got a message that my Java was an old version and had been disabled. Since then, Java doesn't appear in my program list and the shortcut icon on the bottom of the computer screen has disappeared. I thought it would be better to uninstall Java rather than just have it on my computer but disabled. Should I just not worry about it?
