I have updated to

java version "1.7.0_04" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_04-b20) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 23.0-b21, mixed mode, sharing)

However the java plugin does not appear in the about:plugins display -- so there appears to be no way to enable nor use java.

do they appear in the plugins section of about:addons & can you enable java from there? is the up-to-date version listed there?

No, as I stated in the original post java does not appear in the about:plugins section, neither does it appear in the about:addons. Hasn't anyone else seen this?

Is that plugin in a location that Firefox scans for plugins and where Firefox can find it?

I suspect that the link you provide is out of date. First, there is no plugins subdirectory in the distributed Firefox 12 tar, and the ~/.mozilla/plugins directory is empty, yet I do have plugins for Adobe Reader, Citrix, and Shockwave Flash. Furthermore I did the find command that the page recommends (as root) and there is no instance of a null plugin on my system. Furthermore I did try placing a link to the java plugin in all of the recommended places with not change in effect, java is simply not appearing as a plugin.

So, in answer to your question, where would that location be for Firefox 12?

And, not trying to get to snotty, but any links to out of date help pages will be ignored.
