Everything was ok until early last week when Firefox kept on and on crashing. I downloaded the new version on Saturday and all was fine until I switched on on Sunday and nothing, zilch. Opened in internet explorer and all was OK so knew it had to be Firefox. I disabled my Firewall and all came on perfectly, as soon as firewall goes on again Firefox goes off. I have now done a system restore back thingy (I'm sure you know what I mean!!) to before the download and am now having to put up with it crashing when it feels like it. Also very slow and sticky. I am working on Windows 7 if this helps. If this cannot be resolved satisfactorily I will change to Safari or Internet Explorer as this is not the first problems I have had with Firefox.

Hi Taralou,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly)? There is a lot of useful information in there. You can try starting Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while Firefox is starting. If it starts in Safe Mode, you should take a look at Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

The article also suggests that you ensure you have updated your security software as well.

Hopefully this helps!

Matt_G: I was having tons of crashes and hangs and VM hogging, also. I did not find the KB articles directed me to the problem (I know to look at bunky extensions, but that isn't always the culprit.) which I surmised was in Profile.

For whatever reason, a number of recent posters may have (what appears to be) a similar problem. I just deleted 80+ Sessionstore.js files ; now I'm golden.

I would 'think' Firefox would be designed to flush its own toilet, since it doesn't, I'm wondering what else should I be deleting manually to keep it running?

Is there a tutorial for that, or too broad???

Hi Thanks for your responses. Yes my security is up to date and think this is the problem as it runs fine when firewall is disabled. Anonyzmouse... How do I go about deleting files?? Not sure if I want to in case something goes wrong!!! Also why is this now starting to happen?? Everything has been fine until this update

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
