Figured out the basic issue (from Solutions here) why old Firefox not working on old XP-SP3. Found 52.9.0esr download - but when I run the file, it keeps telling me to "Close Firefox". Used Task Manager - nothing - not Firefox or anything else - is shown to be running. Any ideas? Might not be a Firefox issue, but would appreciate any insights. TIA - Jean

To both cor-el & Fred McD - Thanks for your speedy replies. Had tried Safe Mode - both w/ & w/o network - still no luck opening Firefox 49.0.2 (FWIW IE would open but wouldn't load pages) System Restore also failed, but computer had been off for a long time and most recent restore point was Oct 2020, so not too surprising. Finally tried to uninstall Firefox 49.0.02 - got same message to first "Close Firefox". Rechecked Task Manager - no Apps running, BUT - I'd previously ignored the long list of Processes since all indicated 00 CPU use. Scrolled down and saw firefox.exe so hit Remove. Interestingly, IE immediately opened on its own - still not loading pages though. Anyway - that seemed to do the trick and was able to install 52.9.0esr - no problems. One more question, if you don't mind. Is there any reason to fix IE? I never used it before, and of course it's terribly out of date too, along with XP. Thanks so much for your help! Jean H

Reboot the computer.

Do you already have/had Firefox on your system? It could be a problem with an old profile.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

That was very good work. Well Done. Please flag your https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1355874#answer-1455142 post as Solved Problem as this can help others with similar problems. Go to that post and click the 'Solved' button to its right.

Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. I don't think anything is available. You should try asking here: https://support.microsoft.com
