How to disable automatic Tab unloading in Firefox for Android?

Firefox for Android automatically unloads the contents of inactive tabs after a few seconds. This is very annoying, especially when the tab contains fields for editing text, or a chat conversation, which is then lost. I found a support article which says there is an option in "about:config" called "browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory", which allows to disable this "feature". However, in the version I am using (Firefox 68.1.1.), this option seems not to exist. Neither did it exist in the version I used before upgrading. What can I do?

Hi

Please appeciate that as a mobile application, Firefox for Android is designed to work on many devices, some of which may not have that much memory available, so unloading can help manage performance.

I have an (untested) idea that you may wish to try (at your own risk):

  1. Open about:config and select the + icon on the top left hand side
  2. Set browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory as the name and select Create.

Try Firefox for Android and then possibly set that pref to True to see if it makes any difference.

I hope this helps.

An interesting idea, but unfortunately it did not work. I suppose that the option shout be set to "False", not "True", for preventing unloading. But anyway, it did not work.

Hi

Thank you for coming back to us and I am sorry that this did not work. Hopefully this is a feature that can be included in a future update.

Yes, that would be really good. My problem is not so much limited memory, but limited bandwith. Therefore (and for the issues mentioned in the original question) it would help a lot if Firefox would not reload the same pages multiple times.
