When trying to download a file, firefox is unresponsive with 100% cpu while displaying the download dialogue asking to save the file or open it with a program. This hang lasts for over a minute every time. The issue exists even with a completely clean profile and safe mode enabled.

It may be waiting for the OS to parse the list of 'open with' programmes on your computer, what operating system are you on?

In windows for example you can choose the 'open with' defaults from the control panel settings, sometimes these are overwritten by software you install and can cause issues, especially if you later remove the software from your computer.

On a Mac, you can find a similar type of file already on your hard drive, right click on it and choose 'show info', and then you can choose the default application to open that file or choose 'change for all' and choose an application.
