I noticed one of my email accounts was shrinking the list of messages I received into 3 or 4 rows in the message plane- I believe it was Today/ Yesterday/Last Week and Older-- each row had on arrow to open that list then it would show only the opened rows(lists) by the dates. I wanted to adjust this feature but somehow it disappeared and now all my messages are listed and not divided up by the date. I can't find any controls for this feature--- I am speaking about the VIEW of the messages in the message plane and shrinking and expanding by the dates.

You need to go to the menu at least three times!

  1. View|Sort By|Date - gets you messages into date-sorted order.
  2. View|Sort By and choose Ascending or Descending so you can choose oldest first or youngest first.
  3. View|Sort By|Grouped by Sort will re-introduce the Today/Yesterday/Older grouping.

Each group can be collapsed or expanded using its little +/- button.

If you touch any of the column headings (date, subject, correspondent, etc) it will re-sort and undo the grouping. But now you know how to restore it.

Note if you first sort by subject or sender then do View|Sort|Grouped by Sort, it will form groups according to the sorting category. So you can collect together all messages in a thread on the same topic, or all messages from particular senders.

However, I'd normally use the QuickFilter Bar to locate particular messages, topics, senders or dates quickly.
