As of a few months ago, when I drag an image from Firefox to the desktop, the file is saved with no extension. How can I restore old behavior?

If I open 'http:// example .com / image.jpg' to the desktop, it's saved as simply 'image'.

  • I do a LOT of work with images and this has added unnecessary hassle to every step.
  • Happens with JPGs, PNGs, every image format I can find. It would probably happen with other files but images are the only ones I know that can be dragged to desktop.
  • Happens on any domain; I've tried through Google Images, Bing Images, and random domain images.
  • I've searched a lot (Google, this forum, StackExchange) but haven't seen anyone else complain of this.
  • Note that it doesn't happen when I use 'Save image as...', only when I drag an image to my filesystem (e.g. desktop, folder).
  • Chrome doesn't have the same issue, so it's not my OS or another app.
  • I noticed this a few months ago, possibly around the time 56 came out.

Just now, I tried restarting Firefox in safe mode but the above behavior still appeared.

I had the same problem (version 57.0.3 Quantum on macOS 10.13 High Sierra). I couldn't drag and drop pictures without losing its extension. But I found a solution that worked for me!

I completely uninstalled Firefox (in my case, with CleanMyMac in order to uninstall the software properly). Then I installed a fresh version of Firefox and installed back my preferences using my Firefox Account (mozilla.org/fr/firefox/features/sync).

And now it works fine!
