I have been using Thunderbird for years. Today I get a message: Login to server imap.googlemail.com failed. I know my google password is correct.I tried retyping my password but that failed too. Know my password is correct. Can access my email directly through Google site, but for all practical purposes Thunderbird is not working.

Check your account settings. Are you using Normal Password for Authentication Method? If so, change it o Oauth2. Do this for both the IMAP and the SMTP server.

Yeah. I saw that in a previous thread. And I had been using "normal Password" for many years with no problem. I tried changing that. Changed the setting to Oauth2 for both IMAP and SMTP and when I restarted Thunderbird a popup window come up telling me to "Sign in to continue to Mozilla Thunderbird Email" And it listed my correct gmail address and had a button to press "Next" which I did and nothing happened. It just stayed open for several minutes and I had to manually close the window.

This is a symptom of running an old version of Thunderbird. Upgrade to V 52.2.1. it should work better.

What you ran in the past is not relevant when gmail makes changes.
