Up until maybe a couple of months ago I have always (many years!) been able to save any web page using 'Save Page As' from the 'File' menu. Suddenly I could save no web pages at all. The download icon, when I clicked on it,, would say "failed" and only a folder would appear in the file on my computer wherever I tried to save any web page. I've tried everything I can think of, including searching here and with search engines online for answers. The recent, to 54.0, to Firefox update has not fixed the problem. By the way, I still have a Windows 7 PC, and everything else works fine with it. I can download other kinds of things, PDF files, jpgs, etc.--I just cannot save web pages anymore. Thanks in advance for any help!

Can you tell us please is it from the Menu Bar: Files then Save Page As or is it Right Click and Save Page As.

Thanks for your reply, Pkshadow.

In fact I get the exact same result either way. Also, I always know, even before clicking on the download (a downarrow) icon, that the download has failed, by the little orange dot to the right of it.

If you haven't already, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? (More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode)

Not sure if this will help or not but is prob something that someone else will have you work through to detirmine if it is the issue. This was provided to someone else with a similar issue as what you are having. Give this a try https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes and let us know what happens and mark if solved if fixes your issue.

Thanks to both. I will try the safe mode route and get back about the result. :)

(It could be extensions/add-ons, but I think I may have tried deactivating the couple I have already, with no change. Also, I seem to recall there'd been no changes of any sort I knew of when the problem arose a couple of months or so ago. I'd thought perhaps it was a recent Firefox download that didn't take this under consideration (at least for my old version of Windows, i.e., 7,, (as I allow automatic Firefox updates); but it seems unlikely now, as the most recent update didn't help fix it. Anyway, I'll try these remedies and get back.) - jbd

I also have this problem. I had refreshed the browser, but that did not help. In the Safe Mode this problem exist too. I noticed that firstly I download the file directory of the web page - message "Failed" appears (the mentioned little orange dot), then the .htm (.html) file - after "Retry Download" activation. After all, the information is available, but after a second attempt. I use Windows 7 Professional, if this is important. Could anything be done about it?

Hi SargonIII, is the problem repeatable? What I mean is, if you find a page where this happens, and you open it in a private window (which bypasses the cached copy of the page), does the same sequence of events occur? It's much easier to investigate repeatable problems than random ones...

Firefox's Browser Console is a separate window you can open that collects errors related both to web pages and Firefox's own operation. If you find a page where the problem occurs, try:

(1) Open the Browser Console using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+j
  • "3-bar" menu button > Developer > Browser Console
  • Tools menu > Web Developer > Browser Console

(2) Clear existing content by clicking the trashcan in the upper left corner

(3) Leave the Browser Console open and try the function in Firefox. If it fails, check for error messages in the Browser Console.

I have done it. No error messages in the Browser Console, the problem persists. Never mind, I could save pages in two steps (some in one, as is normal).
