I want to review the folder and delete most attachments to save hard drive space. I do NOT want to delete the message along with the attachment. Thanks.

how? the attachment is part of the email. You already have to ability is remove unwanted attachments on a per mail basis. as they concept of an attachment does not exist until the mail is viewed it would be rather hard to do much more than that.

there used to be an add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/attachmentextractor/?src=ss but it died due to lack of interest I think.

as the attachment is a part of the message, you can "detach" the attachment, but there is no folder of them for you to cull.

With the message. Open a message, use ctrl+v to see the message source, scroll down and you'll see the attachment, usually encoded in base-64.

IIRC a right-click on an attachment will give you an option to delete it. You'll probably need to compact to actually regain the space previously occupied by the attachment.

removing attachments in IMAP accounts corrupts your local message store.... just saying.

would be a good feature to add- the ability to delete trash attachments. A sort of ccleaner for photos of relatives dogs
