Ask your email provider, they know what the correct settings are. I suppose they do have some sort of support web site.

Tiscali was taken over by Talk Talk tears ago. I have talked to the technical support and the manual settings i was given do not work. Others have similar problems and there seems to be no difinative version of what manual settings to use. I was hoping that someone with Thunderbird had managed to get their Tiscali mail working and could pass on the settings they used.

I too have been a past user of both lineone.net and tiscali.co.uk. Lineone were subsumed by tiscali some years before TalkTalk bought it all.

I hadn't installed the lineone.net account on this machine but just have done so.

Oddly enough it set up for me using the tiscali smtp server, along wuth a warning that the name of the server (lineone) and that given in the certificate (tiscali) didn't match. I had to permit an exception to get it to accept this mis-match.

I don't think that tiscali accounts used the encrypted password option, but you have asked about sending, not incoming, so this shouldn't be relevant.

The settings it has returned are:

name: imap.lineone.net port:143 security: None authentication method: Encrypted password

name: smtp.lineone.net port:587 security: STARTTLS authentication method: Normal password

The name of the tiscali smtp server that appears in the certificate is:

smtp.tiscali.co.uk

Does this tally with what you have been trying?

So, for sending, I make mine work using:

name: smtp.tiscali.co.uk port: 587 security: STARTTLS authentication method: Normal password

…and I use the full email address as the username.

Thanks for the info

Because I got incoming mail working Thunderbird will not allow me to add outgoing manual details. It says "account already exists" and thats all. I think the only way round this is to delete this email address at tiscali and then try to manually input Thunderbird details as a new email address. Hopefully I will then end up with my original email address back again.

The other problem I have is I dont remember the settings I inputted to get the incoming mail working in the first place. If you do have these settings I would be very gratefull to know them. All I remember is that it was pop3.

When I do all this I will input the settings you have given me for incoming (if you have them) and the outgoing which you have already given. Thanks

You can add smtp servers separately. Or indeed edit anything already set up - but never try to change an IMAP connected account to POP or vice versa.

go to Tools|Account Settings

Select an account to see its incoming settings. In the Account Settings tab, you can also see the outgoing ("SMTP") server being used.

To change or add SMTP servers, go down to the bottom of the list of accounts. The last one, "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" lets you edit, delete or add SMTP servers. So you can go there and add or fix up the existing Tiscali SMTP settings.

You may however hit a block where it says that you can't change settings because one exists already. I'm sure I have worked past this in the past, but editing the prefs.js file may be a useful step. Let me know if you aren't allowed to get at the settings.

I tried what you suggested but alas it wont alow me to me to edit any thing. Whether I try "server settings" or "outgoing server settings" It keeps saying "account already exists please enter a different account name".

Thanks for your help Zenos Unfortunately nothing seems to get the email going if using Thunderbird. I have tried all the settings you sugested and have had a long conversation withTalktalk technical. Have also inputted all the settings given to me by technical and Thunderbird still didn't work.

In desperation I tried Windows Live Mail and suprise, suprise. It found all my settings automatically ( no manual inputting) and works perfectly. I have no idea why Thunderbird didn't want to know but it didn't and thats all I can say. Thanks again for your help.

when it says account already exists, there is an account name displayed in the pane in front of you. change it be adding a 1 on the end.

Now that you no longer have the same account added twice you can edit things. But you might have to remove a duplicate account.

Thanks for the info Matt

i got t windows live mail to work. it found all my settings automatically unlike thunderbird which couldnt find my server. i will stick with windows live mail now as i cant spare the time battling with thunderbird. i did in fact delete all my accounts from thunderbird and added my account as a new one together with the settings given to me by talktalk tech. still wouldnt work so i have given up on thunderbird and am happy with windows live mail. Again, thanks for your advice.
