I could not sign-in to my Gmail account using Thunderbird. I think it may be because I have a proxied internet connection.

I could not use my Gmail account in Thunderbird, although I have entered correct Username and Password.I have also tried enabling IMAP on Gmail settings and allowed less secure apps to use my Gmail account. Is there any problem if the connection is proxied, because in our hostel we have a proxied connection.

it is more likely your having issues with an anti virus product that is getting in the way than your proxy

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Sorry I have forgot to tell that I use Ubuntu14.04. I have no anti virus software installed.

If the hostel Internet connection does not allow ports for IMAP, POP, and SMTP I don't think you can use Thunderbird. Then your best bet is webmail (via the proxy).

I don't think they would have blocked IMAP or POP,because it is only to block unwanted websites like youtube, hacking sites(which may be misused).
