In all the years Ive used Firefox, Ive only needed to Backup and restore my Bookmarks 4 times. All four times Im able to "backup" to a JSON file, but when it comes time to restore, I get "Unable to process the backup file". Im sure you can appreciate how frustrating this is. The attempts have been made on a desktop, laptop, and even (Years ago) a work desktop. Can someone please help me with this. I can't imagine its something Im doing wrong since theres only 3-4 steps involved.

What reasons did you have to restore a JSON backup?

A possible cause of the "Unable to process.." error message is that the places.sqlite file is corrupted and in such cases you can already have issues with the bookmarks.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database file then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
