I am trying to subscribe to info from a site I trust, which has these instructions:

To subscribe, simply click on one of the feed icons and your blog aggregator (RSS) program should do the rest. If not, you may need to verify that you have RSS-compatible software installed on your computer.

When I click on any of their RSS icons, Firefox asks what program I should use to open an XML Document.

Firefox can subscribe to the feeds and turn them into live bookmarks. Find Firefox's rss icon in the tools palette and put it in the menu or on a toolbar where you can easily see and use it.

Then just navigate to the site and click on the icon. Use the subscribe button Practice by trying it on this forum. You will be able to subscribe to single threads or the whole forum.

Have put RSS subscribe icon in my toolbar, but it is greyed out when I am on the page from which I want to sign up.

When I click on the icon at the site where I want to subscribe, it still asks what program I want to use to open an XML file. If I tell that window to use Firefox.exe, I get the following message:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. [followed by code for an RSS 2.0 file]

You can try to create a keyword bookmark and invoke it via the location/address bar with a space and the feed URL appended.

data:text/html,<link rel="alternate" type="application/xhtml+xml" title="Add Feed" href="%S" /><b>Click the <u>Subscribe Feed button</u> on the navigation toolbar</b>
