My previous shortcuts have all disappeared and when I try to add one to the toolbar it just opens the site in a new browser.

I have unticked the toolbar option and then reset it but to no avail.

I am using version 33

Hello,

Not sure if this is related but you have potential malware on your computer. You can remove it by following the guide:

I recommend you remove the malware first and see if that fixes your problem. If it does not, try the steps below.

First, try to see if you can recover them. Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing.

  1. Click the Bookmarks button Bookmarks-29 (or New Fx Menu > Bookmarks) and select Show All Bookmarks.
  2. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
  3. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
  4. In the new window that appears, click OK.
  5. Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

If that fails, it could be that the file that stores your bookmarks, places.sqlite is corrupt. First, check that it isn't set to read-only. Go to your profile folder by either enter about:support in your address bar, or go to:

  • Help (or New Fx Menu > Help-29) > Troubleshooting Information

Beside Profile Folder, click the "Show Folder" button to access your profile in Windows Explorer. Right click on the places.sqlite file and select Properties. Under the General tab, uncheck the "Read-only" check box if it is ticked.

You can also install the Places Maintenance extension to run maintenance on the file. Please read the following articles first as they provide helpful hints and instructions that may be relevant to you:

Thanks.

I have a professional virus/malware program running and there was no sign of the potential issues you raised.

However using the restore facility found the bookmarks and got the bookmarks toolbar working correctly.

Thanks

Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize

  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup
