Won't open old Word .doc 97-2003. It treats it as a binary file. Safari will open it.

I am trying to open a Word .doc 97-2003 and Firefox gives a pop-up that it is a binary file and won't open it. When I take the same action in Safari it opens it just fine. Can I change a setting in Firefox that will allow me to complete this action? I am using a MacBook Pro with Firfox 19 on it. Currently using Office 2011.

If it is a Word document, why do you want Firefox to open it? Firefox is not a word processor.

This issue is not that Word won't open it. The issue is when Firefox goes to down load it it treats it as a binary file and does not know what to do with it. I would upload an image but I keep getting an error message for a tiff file and a pdf

This can happen if the server doesn't send the file with a proper MIME (content) type.
