Certain websites run ads that will suddenly start blaring audio, but I don't want to keep my computer's audio on mute. Is there a way to prevent all audio just from Firefox?

You can click the volume icon to open the mixer and set the volume level for the Firefox program to a lower setting. That is only possible if there is a player active that plays a media file in Firefox.

A newly created extension (Muter) provides such feature. You can have a try: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/muter/

It supports WinXP/Win7/Ubuntu. A button will be placed on the addon bar and you could use this button to mute the entire browser.
