I have an older laptop with very little memory, so I keep Firefox closed when I'm not using it. Both MS Hearts and MS Mahjong periodically open it to display their webpages. That brings play to a halt, and the game freezes, and sometimes crashes. Is there a way to block them from opening Firefox?

You can show the profile selection dialog before starting which will give you a chance to abort loading external links. Launch the Profile Manager and untick "Use the selected profile without asking at startup". Alternatively, edit profiles.ini and change StartWithLastProfile=0.

You can start with not setting Firefox as the default browser to prevent other applications from opening Firefox.
