All of a sudden, on starting Thunderbird the first (oldest) message in the folder shows up, instead of the most recent.

As above. On opening Thunderbird, the oldest message in the Inbox shows up. It always used to be the most recent. How can I change this back?

Click on the column header labeled DATE.

Clicking any header sorts on that column and places a small pointer on the header. Clicking the same header a second time reverses the sort.
