I realised I ought to see if a video in an online course I was trying to follow worked in the stock browser (Google Chrome); after a bit of crackling it did. When I retried it in Firefox, bingo! It worked. I wonder if the problem is/was with the tablet itself. Problem solved, but Heaven knows why or how. Now I can follow the course either on PC or tablet easily.
