I added a new email account, and, after making a manual correction to the username, I was able to receive the test email I sent myself. But the new account isn't checked on the regular 10 minute check of all my older accounts, I have to check it separately. Also, the new account shows up in the "folders" pane, whereas none of the older accounts do.

is your new account POP?

Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings > advanced button

If your account is pop, you can set iut to use the global inbox here. You will also find a check this server when getting mail option which is probably not checked. Not this is greyed out if that server is used in any earlier accounts where the server is set to check.

When I booted up this morning, the new account had disappeared from the folders window - I have no idea why. I checked the advanced setting and the "get mail" option was not checked. I checked in and tried the "get messages" button - still no new account. I went back and looked at the "get mail" option, and it had gone unchecked. I rechecked it, went back to "get messages" and now it works!!! I think Thunderbird need a good psychotherapist :)
