I have Google as my homepage but I receive a google error 404 instead
I cannot use Google as my homepage or reach google.com by typing the URL in the browser. Instead of Google I get http://www.google.(something, can't recall what).php which presents me with a google page containing the google lettering and identifies itself as a pretty fancy 404 error page.
I have tried everything including the ultimate frustration of messing around where I should not be--in the about:config area. I modified the two lines below the line that selects google as my homepage. I would like to restore Firefox 4 to the original downloaded condition including the about:config area.
When i downloaded firefox 4 it worked perfectly. How it got the 404 error as my homepage is unknown.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Please do the following.
- In the location bar, type about:config and hit Enter.
- In the filter at the top, type: keyword.URL
- Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=
- Go to File | Exit
- Restart Firefox, go to the site you want to set as your homepage.
- Go to Tools | Options | General.
- Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the first dropdown menu.
- Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.
The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.
