There is a feature in outlook that I use all the time at work, where if I reply to a message in my inbox but I had already sent a previous reply, it will let me pick up my reply to include in the thread, that I reply to instead.

It would be great if Thunderbird would do that for my personal emails.

I think you can do this by right-clicking the previous reply in the Sent folder, Edit As New Message.

I don't want to have to go to sent folder, and I may not realize / remember that I had a response out there already to the email.

Consider then right-clicking an inbox message, Open Message In Conversation, to display the thread of received and sent messages in one tab.
