While in Yahoo email, a red block (Mozilla logo) appeared, stating that a breach had occurred, and all logins, etc were compromised. It suggested that all bank accts, etc should be frozen. How do we verify that this is not a scam?

Simply. Firefox will not give you any pop-ups of such nature, EVER. It is most definitely a scam to trick you into either clicking or doing something malicious. You can also check your system and network logs to confirm/deny the possibility of a breach.
