If "Save password" for a site is ignored nothing can reactivate the option.
I have tried many suggestions to solve this, but none helped. On at least 6 occasions I have had an option to "Save password" (including username) and I have waited until the site successfully loaded so as NOT to accidentally save an invalid password. On returning to those sites I am not offered an option to save. This seems to be a common problem, and I've tried ALL the obvious answers. The site does not appear in 'passwords' or 'exceptions'. Clearing the 'history' (cache?) and 'cookies' makes no difference. The problem occurs only if I ignore the first offer to save the username and password. No second chances. Searching the help finds many similar complaints, but this exact problem, although not uncommon, has no useful answer that I can find.

Have you checked your preferences to see if the site is listed under exceptions for saving passwords, if so remove that and it will offer again to save passwords.
Note also there is no need to delay entering a password, because you may always delete it manually, and if you enter a new password when logging in it will offer to revise the saved password.

Yes, I have read both threads and followed their advice. I have the impression that, on sites which for security reasons prevent stored passwords, Firefos still offers to store the username and password, but only if the option is accepted on first login. Under this condition the username is stored but the password is not.
My problem may relate to this; if so it should be sufficient to clear some Firefox caches. Using both Firefox and CCleaner I have cleared the Internet Cache, the Cookies and Download History. CCleaner lists 6 other Firefox items as clearable, but I don't know which I can safely use without losing critical data.
Have you ended your Firefox session since you indicated that you did not want to save the password? If you always start up by restoring your previous session, it's possible that some data that usually is only stored temporarily could live on and on.
I wish it was so simple. The sites I can't save usernames and passwords for have 3 things in common. 1) they aren't in the 'Saved passwords' list, 2) they aren't in the 'Exceptions' list, and 3) Firefox offered to save username and password the first time I entered them, but never again.
jscher2000: I usually clear Firefox (closing all instances before switching off the machine) once or twice a week so this is not the problem.
CCleaner offers 9 options for clearing Firefox data. Of these I clear the Internet cache, Cookies and Download history. I don't clear Internet history, Session, Site preferences, Saved form information, Saved passwords or 'Compact databases'. Which of these might be relevant to the problem? And, more to the point, which can I afford to lose?
Be careful with using CCleaner as it may corrupt some of the SQLite databases.
It is always best to use build-in Firefox means to clear data.
You can try to check the permissions via the about:permissions page (use the location bar).
You can also try to clear the "Site Preferences"
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
