Can you please send a screenshot of the search bar you are referring to?

This search box and grey line appeared this morning when I turned on my computer- Yesterday it was not there and i have not made any changes to any firefox settings I have tried everything to try and remove it and get back to my previous layout but to no avail. It is so annoying that if it cannot be removed I will have to switch to safari. thanks for any help you could offer.

Hi gldfshbob, What you're seeing is not a search box, it's a tab. Note that you are not able to type text in it. For more information on tabbed browsing, check out the following article: Use tabs to organize lots of websites in a single window

fine its a tab not a window-- what I asked is how to remove it and the line it occupies and return to the previous layout

Hmm... That line has always been there. It's called the tab bar. Maybe we're referring to different things. Can you provide more detail?

Maybe you were using Full Screen Mode (Mac: Command+Shift+F).
