I am exploring using Thunderbird in a similar way to how I had Outlook set up for GTD, but I am stuck on trying to find out how to configure the statuses of tasks.

I can't find this anywhere in the UI, or in the documentation, but it strikes me as something that people would need to customise. Maybe I'm missing something? Can anyone point out where you can configure the task status?

I presume you can see that Status is visible in the Task window, with 5 choices: Not Specified, Needs Action, In Process etc., and is visible in the tooltip in the Today Pane. Are you trying to define a custom status? I'm not aware that's possible.
