When sending mails, why does Thunderbird open a new server connection for every message?
When sending several mails from the same e-mail address (e.g. after using send later feature), Thunderbird appears to open a new connection to the SMTP server for every message rather than using the same connection for sending all messages. This makes the process slow. Is there anything that can be done about this?

I'd be curious about your definition of a 'new connection to the SMTP server'. Can you elaborate?
For every message Thunderbird says it is connecting to the SMTP server (before actually sending it).
If the same connection was used, it would keep sending one message after another (much faster).
Let's assume 'connection' is the TCP session established between your computer and the provider's SMTP server. Once a message has been sent, this TCP session will be taken down. Otherwise the server would need to permanently hold a huge number of sessions increasing all the time. This isn't feasible. So the TCP session establishment is the way it works, and nothing Thunderbird specific.
There may be other reasons if this process is slow in your case, such as slow DNS response, low bandwidth of your Internet connection, a busy server, etc. So there may be things you can tweak, but those would be presumably outside of Thunderbird.
