I figured it out, had to get into the options page and change settings that the update changed and then click to settings icon after opening a new tab and change those settings also. There must be a way to perform an update with out screwing up someone settings that does not have the time to diagnose what happened when everything goes wacky after an update Thanks for helping Jeff O

Hi, goto about:config, by typing it in your URL bar. Dispell the warnings. Search for these two booleans using the search box on the page.

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled

Double click them to set them to false, this will restore your old new tab & home pages.

No no, type about:config in your URL bar. Then click on the button to continue, using the search box on the about:config page, search for them -- don't directly type into the URL bar.

I was able to do that, my home page is now lost and when I click to add a tab there is still a page that is not like before with a bunch of pre-loaded advertiser pages. All of my pages that I use throughout the day are all gone still
