I am trying to use the Cricut Design Space site, and download the plugin. This site has worked for me in the recent past and suddenly does not. Their customer service seems to think that it is something with the ISP, but other computers in our house can run everything just fine. Google Chrome claims there is a security certificate or something that needs to be updated, but in my (computer illiterate) mind, the site should work on Firefox and does not work here either. Any ideas??

You need Adobe Flash for Cricut, which isn't installed in the Firefox that you posted here with.

Using Firefox - get it here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Make sure you deselect the Optional offers before downloading Flash.
