I used Malware Tips http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-start-menu-updated-popup/ to remove adware. The removal procedure says that it may have been included in a recent install. The only install that I did in the date in question is Thunderbird.

No version of Thunderbird from https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/ has been proven to come with any form of aware/malware. This would be a hot topic about it here, at forums.mozillazine.org and techs sites around if true with recent TB version.

It may have came with a recent update or install of some other software and you only noticed it at some point.

Software downloaded from some download sites like download .com aka cnet can have stuff bundle with otherwise clean software for instance.

Hello Mozilla,

I recently downloaded and installed Mozilla Thunderbird email client software on a customer's computer and it installed a bunch of malware, ad popups and other adware junk upon install... scared out of my wits ... I uninstalled TB and then ran Avast boot time scan and luckily it cleaned it all up...

However to confirm the suspicion where I got the file from, which at the time I believed was from your website, I did another test download from your website today and ran it through virustotal.com and was SHOCKED to see the Thunderbird install file was infected with a malware virus ... I have included 2 screen attachments as proof.

One result especially from "Rising" is nothing that proves.

Seen false reports from Rising on virustotal lately for Firefox and Thunderbird. They no long do a English website and the antivirus is made by a Chinese company.

The malware, and other stuff did not come with Thunderbird as it was likely already on PC or was installed by another application install or update.

As I said, Software downloaded from some download sites like download .com aka cnet can have stuff bundled with otherwise clean software for instance.

Here is what I am going to do. I have an old laptop that I plan on reformatting anyway and will install the thunderbird file that I downloaded from your website and see what happens... then I will uninstall it and then go to cnet/download.com and try that one. However, I will ask is If the thunderbird install that is on download.com and other websites was stolen from your website and packaged with adware virus, why hasn't it be removed from a cease and desist complaint from mozilla? They have no business doing this to infect user's computers

Almost all Moderators here (without Administrator tag also) are not involved with Mozilla but are volunteer users that were given mod ability.

I did not suggest to download Thunderbird from a download site like cnet aka download .com but rather downloading software from sites like that one may be why the customer PC is infected.
