This should only occur if you click straight down on the scroll wheel. To block it, turn off the autoscrolling feature. Here's how:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the General mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use autoscrolling" and OK out.

Now, clicking the scroll wheel on a blank area should not do anything.

Success?

By the way, if this occurs by accident when you are just scrolling and not clicking the wheel, it could indicate one of the following:

  • mouse wheel starting to wear out
  • mouse batteries getting low (cordless mouse)
  • incompatibility of Firefox with your mouse driver software
