Whenever i am saving any files of Microsoft office and pdf files , they are saved in attachment.ashx format which is very difficult to identify after downloading the file..pls help

You can always override the file extension when you save the file if it isn't the correct file extension.

You can try to inspect the MIME database with the registry editor (regedit.exe) and do a search for that MIME type (file extension) via Ctrl+F.
Be careful with editing the registry as there is no Undo possible: all changes are applied immediately. You can export key(s) before making changes.

It is best not to go to the registry if you are not familiar with editing the registry and keep it with adding the correct file extension.

Did you try to delete the file mimeTypes.rdf in the Firefox Profile Folder ?
