Changes have Consequences!?

The new iteration of FF trashed most of my toolbars, replaced verbal titles with icons, does not clearly describe them, and now half of my bookmarks are missing, backgrounds of many pages (eg one of my 1099’s) is dark blue with black typing!

I was happy with what I had! Now I am considering trashing it all and buying a Mac!
    What’s a guy to do???

Hi BobbyFox, could you clarify which Firefox is giving you these problems? Your question was posted under Android, and your device indicated it's running iOS, but your comments refer to buying a Mac. Are you on Windows?

Firefox 57 for Windows does not run Classic Theme Restorer or Tab Mix Plus, popular legacy extensions to modify the user interface. Extensions that create their own toolbar also are no longer able to do that. So yes, it's an adjustment.

You can modify the appearance of the user interface area using custom style rules. These can be applied by creating a file named userChrome.css. I have information on the kinds of changes possible on this page, for example: https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html

But in order to customize Firefox to your needs, it would be great to get a very specific "wish list" of changes that will help you be more productive and comfortable using it. I think one is that you prefer text on toolbar buttons instead of icons. See my earlier post over here: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1185440#answer-1060917

...half of my bookmarks are missing...

That shouldn't happen. Can you double-check using the Library window ("Show All Bookmarks") or Bookmarks Sidebar?

Another thing that probably would help is adding the optional new bookmarks menu button (). It should work the same way as the old bookmarks menu button (), which was the "right-half" of the inseparable star+book duo.

To add that button, either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

If you still have incomplete bookmarks when viewed that way:

You may need to restore a backup. This article has more info on that: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.
