I am using Lubuntu LTS14.04. Since the last update in May Thunderbird opens in full screen. Trying to re-size by mouse does not work (anymore). I do get a symbol in one corner but is just disappears when I try to move it. Also the re-size menu (Alt Spacebar) does not give the re-size option (grey tone). If I open another window like addres book I can see the toolbar of Ubuntu but still cannot re-size. By the way the ubuntu toolbar also changed after this same update and puts all symbols on the left hand side. Also the open applications are not indicated in the toolbar anymore... weird weird....

The first line is not a verbatim copy-n-paste command line for you to use; it's an English language sentence telling you what to do. Use your regular text editor to edit the file. You will need to change the '*' to whatever your Thunderbird profile is.

It might be easier just to do a search of your file system for the file named xulstore.json

If you tried it as shown, the asterisk probably caused the error message.

I used to use Ubuntu. That awful desktop drove me away to find something workable. I now use LMDE2 with Mate, though Cinnamon seems well thought of too.

WORKAROUND: 1. Edit ~/.thunderbird/*/xulstore.json 2. Search for: "sizemode":"fullscreen" 3. Change it to: "sizemode":"normal"

dear toad-hall, thanks for your reply. unfortunately I receive an error message when I enter the first line: no "edit" mailcap rules found for type "application/json"

Alternatively I changed the first character from thunderbird to Thunderbird in the terminal box. Now I receive a message that I have no permission to write in this file. REMARK: As I mentioned above that at the same time this problem with Thunderbird occurred the task bar of LUBUNTU does not show active application symbols anymore and brought all the standard symbols to the left hand side. I managed to shift these to the right by using "spacing", but this is not a real solution I guess. Is it possible to restore to an earlier version? thx, Guus

Thanks Zenos! sometimes things are easier than you think......remains the issue of the toolbar. Does this also have a text file with settings?

Found the answer how to reset the toolbar in askubuntu forum. cp /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Lubuntu/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Lubuntu/panels. Log out and log in. This worked fine. Just make sure you type the "el" character and not the "one". Case closed.
