I'm having an email issue with Thunderbird on Debian 9.8. I cannot retrieve my mail. OAuth fails to connect, and I also cannot connect via normal password. The error log says 'user canceled master password entry' and then the next line reads 'Couldn't decrypt string'. I have everything setup properly on the email side (gmail; imap enabled and 'allow less secure apps to connect' is enabled). Password is correct as is the user name. That log, I should mention, is from when I try to use normal password, not OAuth. I'd really like the OAuth issue resolved more than anything else.

This all sounds a bit odd. You may try the procedure to reset the master password and see if that makes a difference. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password#Resetting_the_master_password

Note, this would also remove any account passwords Thunderbird has remembered, so you'd need to enter the account password the next time it's needed.

For IMAP and SMTP servers set the 'Authentication type' to 'OAuth2' in your Thunderbird account settings. If your account is POP, stick with 'Normal Password'. In addition you'll need to 'Allow less secure apps' in your Google settings.

You haven't provided any information about the version of Thunderbird you're using. So make sure you're on the latest release version which is currently 60.6.0.
