open thunderbird select a received message select e.g. the first sentence or some words, press Delete and whole message is deleted and put in the recycle bin.

Well, yes. You can't edit a received message. So the delete key is understood to mean to delete the selected message.

Why are you trying to alter a received message? Possibly what you want to do can be done some other way.

If you use Reply, Forward or Edit Message As New then the selected message will open in the editor and you can change it to your heart's content. But of course Thunderbird will assume you intend to send it on to someone else. It won't let you save the changes without your sending it.

You are right it makes no sense altering a received message but i always got distracted because you can select a word or sentence which gets blue. Because of the colour change you think it acts on this and not the whole message. Don't do this when you think you are in editing mode and the message is in the recycle bin. Thanks for your swift response.
