I tried to update to mavericks, but am unable to open the files to install. From what I have read this is probably a good thing; however now firefox keeps on downloading the files and I can't seem to make it stop. Each time I open firefox the whole process starts again..

You should actually update to mavericks, it's a good solid update and plus, your version of Mac isn't getting security updates anymore, meaning it's vulnerable to attack (despite public opinion Mac isn't invulnerable).

This isn't really a Firefox question anyway..... You install Mavericks via the App store, not through Firefox. http://www.macworld.com/article/2056564/how-to-install-mavericks-over-leopard.html

Tyler, thanks for the reply. I was able to stop the continuous download by reconfiguring Firefox. I am still up in the air about mavericks and yes, it was downloaded from the mac store. Maybe I will try again,if i can figure out why neither firefox or adobe can open the downloaded files. As far as I know both are up to date
