The normal behavior is to open a blank tab, as it opens Yahoo that will be caused by an add-on. Check and yahoo related add-ons you have to see if they are doing this. Another add-on that does this is the freeze net assistant add-on, if you have that one you can uninstall it to stop it opening Yahoo.

There are add-ons that let you choose what to oen in a new tab such as NewTabURL - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl

Until you identify what add-on is causing Yahoo to open in new tabs and remove it, the NewTabURL add-on may conflict with the other add-on causing problems.
