I do a search on Google. Then, when I click on a search item, it gets hijacked and some advertising pops up. How do get rid of this pesky thing?
This problem is intermittent. When it does occur I note that the URL starts out properly but then there is a delay while something redirects the request to an advertising page. Usually a goback does not clear it. Multiple gobacks in rapid succession will sometimes clear it. Else I close the session and start again. My workaround is to copy the URL and paste it into the command line. No problem then. I have run the new Ad-Aware which found four "serious threats" but none got rid of the problem. Experimentally I have tried shutting down various processes (including some svchost.exes for the dlls) without finding where where this annoying nasty is hiding. I am wondering if anyone at Firefox as experience with this advertising trick and can you tell me where or what to look for to eliminate it?

Sounds like Malware on your PC.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order. (Not all programs detect the same Malware.) They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have.
Note: If your Malware infection is bad enough and you are mis-directed to URL's other than what is posted, you may have to use a different PC to download these programs and use a USB stick to transfer them to the afflicted PC.

- Click Help > Check for Updates
- Follow the prompts for updating
