I am trying to transfer my profile from Firefox on my Windows XP computer to a new Windows 8.1 computer. I have gone through the procedure on your support page for creating a new profile and saving it to a memory stick. The file saved was "times.json". I tried to copy and paste this into the Firefox on Windows 8.1 machine with no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I can't say that I am familiar with the article that you are referring to. However if you have both Firefox browsers up to date then you are in luck. Mozilla has been working on making it easier for users to get the same browsing experience on all the computers that you use. The way that I am going to tell you will take care of things like, tabs, bookmarks, passwords, history, add-ons and preferences. I personally do not know of a way to move more. If that is what you are looking for we will need someone else. Now for what I do know. First make sure that Firefox is up to date. This version on Vista and Windows 7 looks very different then v28 and older. Next the icon in the top right with three horizontal lines is the replacement for the Firefox button. Click that symbol. On the drop down menu near the bottom there will be an icon to sync. Click that. You will then need to set up an account. Hope this works for you. Sorry if this is not what you were looking for.

Why don't you use the Sync option ? Instead of doing this manually.

I'm not sure what you try to do with the times.json file.

Did you copy the full profile folder to the USB stick?

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
