I have an IMAP email account with Virgin Media. I have been backing up my Thunderbird email as follows (not sure where I found this method) WIN + R %appdata%/Thunderbird/ Ctrl A Drag all files to External Hard Drive When I open the Backup file there are two files Open 62hcjzp7.default-release (whatever that all means) there are loads of folders one being MAIL Thus contains all my folders from Local folders For every one there is a File and an MSF File How do/Can I restore these to my current version of Thunderbird? I have tried Import from another Thunderbird installation, Profile folder Open the back upp and Select Profiles Tick Mail messages. It says Compete but never copied anything It does create an empty folder under Local Folders in Thunderbird.

My question is can I restore from this backup? If not, what is the best way to backup and restore Thunderbird? Bill

and I immediately began scrambling to get it back. I found this somewhere: "Don't Delete Files" is the preferred option because it saves the old profile's folder and allows you to recover the files to a new profile. So that gave me hope because that's what I had clicked (unfortunately, it was right before I saw the cancel button over on the right). That's what I get for being in a hurry I guess.

Anyhow, after 4 days of reading support forums and tons of trial and error, I'm no closer to restoring that profile than when I first started (although I've learned a lot about what does NOT work).

Btw, both my profiles have always been set up as POP3 at Gmail, although if I ever get this current problem sorted out I'll be shopping for a different POP3 provider. But that's another story.

I know how to create a new profile with Profile Manager. And I found the Profiles folders under both Thunderbird folder as well as ThunderbirdOLD folder. Have I been on the right track so far?

In the Thunderbird/Profiles folder, I don't see a folder with the deleted profile name (except the new ones (duds) I've since created ). On the other hand, I don't see the name of the profile that I did NOT delete either, but somehow it seems to be working just fine. Maybe it's the ".default" folder or ".default-release" folder? I've only ever had two profiles and I may have created the non-deleted profile first, so did that one end up being named .default? -shrug- I have no clue.

Anyhow, in the ThunderbirdOLD/Profiles folder, I also see ".default" as well as ".default-release" folders too. But in addition, I'm seeing a ".deletedprofile" named folder. So that's where I originally thought my several dozen email folders with several thousand emails and Address Book etc are hiding. But I've copied all the above mentioned folders into the several new Profiles I've created, on a trial and error basis but so far..... no luck. All I get when I open one is the new set up screen to set up a new pop3 account.... which I can do, but that's just starting from scratch without any of my saved data. I'm running out of ideas.

Where am I going wrong?

Thunderbird automatically updated to v128 earlier this week after I went to Help - About Thunderbird to check that it had updated to v115.14.

Everything seemed okay immediately after the update, but when I started Thunderbird the next day it was very unresponsive. Checking the Activity Manager showed that Thunderbird was indexing messages, but that this was happening very slowly. I let Thunderbird do its thing that day in the hope that things would settle down.

The next day when I started Thunderbird things were still bad. I tried Rebuilding the Global Database but when I restarted Thunderbird it was just as bad, if not worse.

I then turned off indexing in the Thunderbird settings and Thunderbird is now responsive and back to normal.

Is anyone else seeing anything like this? Any suggestions to fix the problem?

I am a long time Thunderbird user so my profile is very large with a lot of accounts, and has been through a lot of Thunderbird versions, so it is potentially more complicated than normal.

Thunderbird version is currently 128.1.0esr (32-bit).

Thanks

I've been a Thunderbird user for years. I have no idea what they changed recently, but it's incredibly, incredibly SLOW, almost to the point of unusability. Even something as simple as deleting emails.

I usually do these in chunks -- select multiples and delete. We're not talking about hundreds of emails at at time here, just maybe 5-15. Select them all, hit delete, and it should take just a couple of seconds to delete the messages. It did, in the past. But lately, it's taking so long that I could leave and make a sandwich, and when I come back, maybe it will be done. Maybe it will still be working, though, or maybe it will have locked up because it was taking so long.

It's pretty difficult to get work done at this rate.

Hello. My Thunderbird has been slow to pen, lagging while in it,and when clicking on messages, they do not show, and have to close it by right clicking the icon several times then waiting for it to close, then when reopening it,it says it is processing, and still open, and a box appears with an option to close the program so it can open again.I have done nothing to cause this.I have many important emails etc,and i cant uninstall the program,so i installed OE Classic, and was able to import settings from Thunderbird to it,and luckily i was able to export Thunderbirds setting to a 2.1 gn file that was the file i used to import to OE Classic, but OE Classic waits, and authenticates, and then i get a big error message, and here is the screenshot. I guess i,l try outlook express if its still any good for email(have heard /read otherwise) By the way i tried right clicking on the thunderbird shortsut, and selecting run as admin, and make it run in compatibility mode for win7,and thunderbird was fast for a day or two,but now its back to quicksand. Any help is appreciated. ThankYou, Screenshot....

Hi, I'd like to create a filter that uses a list of names or addresses to send emails to folders. So instead of "if sender contains" Political candidate #1 OR Political candidate #2 and on and on I'd like to be able to use a list of some format that contains the same information.

Is that possible?

I would like to export all of the email addresses in a collection of email folders. Some text format would be nice, csv or, even better, tab delimited to pull into a database to summarize.

I'm running on an M1 Mac, Thunderbird version 128.1.0esr.

Is there some utility that can help? Or some way to Applescript it?

Thank you,

Gary

Is Mozilla working on the below email I have received from Microsoft? "The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?

Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods.

I received an email from Microsoft saying I could lose emails on my hotmail account if I don't upgrade any third party mail applications to a version which uses "modern authentication methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps". I'm not tech savvy but do I assume this means I need to upgrade my Thunderbird account to satisfy their concerns and, if so, how do I do this? Thank you Geoff Smith

Dear support, I have set up a Nextcloud with a calendar that is already synchronizing via DAVx5 to my mobile phone via a dyn-dns-domain. Also the DAV connection to Thunderbird works if I use my LAN IP to contact the (local) nextcloud server.

However, if I want to use the dyn-dns-domain (that works with DAVx5 on my mobile phone), I get error 401. Via e.g. Firefox I can log on to the nextcloud via the dyn-dns-domain as well without issues. Nextcloud is set up as part of a docker service behind a SWAG reverse proxy (that is bypassed when using the LAN IP approach as that goes directly to the Nextcloud docker container), but as the configuration works with the DAVx5 on my mobile phone, I am not sure how Thunderbird would try to get access any different. Is there a way in Thunderbird to see details on the exchange to the server to see where the issue comes from? That might at least provide some more information what could be the difference between DAVx5 and Thunderbird. Thanks for any hint on how I can identify the problem.

Hello!

I might be stupid, but I would like to add micorsoft exchange account (unfortunately) and I have downloaded daily build. But I cannot find "Exchange Web Services" option.

I'm following the steps: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Exchange

> Add an Exchange account using the usual Thunderbird process, and selecting the "Exchange Web Services" option.

Not sure where is "Exchange Web Services" option. Would be grateful if you could clarify this.

Cannot add exchange account.

Thank you.

This is essentially the same problem as https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1430726 . I am running 128.1.0esr, and the problem surfaced recently. I installed 128.0.1esr (replacing 115.13.0) on July 31. and the problem might have been re-introduced there. I have not researched the version numbers, so I do not know why I went from 115.13.0 to 118.0.1esr.

Here is the problem. I want to see all of the mails with a certain string in the sender field. After I have typed the first character in the filter field, Thunderbird goes into a "Not Responding" state, and I see a spinning blue circle. After I have entered the entire string, it takes a while before TB becomes responsive. When TB becomes responsive, I can delete all of the selected messages (in less than a second). But when I then remove or change the string, TB takes a lot of time before becoming responsive again. Wayne Mery posted at the end of that other archived thread "115.9.0 has a patch related to quick filters which may help." Has that patch somehow been regressed? Thanks.
